Fit for Mama: Break that plateau

Weight loss plateaus can be tough to break. Here are a few reasons why you may be stuck in a rut. First, weight loss comes with either a decrease in calories or an increase in activity or both. It makes sense to think, “If I eat less, I will lose weight.” Often, people take this too far. If you are eating under 1500 calories as a man or 1200 calories as a female, your body is in a “starvation” mode and is hanging on to every calorie you eat. It’s not getting enough fuel to let go of those fat stores. The other reason you may be at a plateau is too much working out. Your body is susceptible to overuse injuries and fatigue. Try for 30-60 minutes of activity a day and you’ll be on your way to a steady, but permanent weight loss.

Fit for Mama: Knee concerns

Have you ever wondered if you will eventually suffer from a knee injury after all the running, jumping, stair-stepping and leg pressing performed in your lifetime? According to one study, people that remain moderately active throughout their life are not at a greater risk for knee arthritis. Staying active consistently will improve many health concerns. To reduce your risk of injury further, it is important to perform a proper warm-up and use correct techniques. This season, set a goal to work toward and stick to it without fear of injury!

Fit for Mama: Workout wear

If you’ve ever seen any of the Rocky movies, you probably wonder why this all-star boxer works out in sweatpants and a sweatshirt? He sweats profusely and looks totally miserable. Some might think this helps burn more fat because you are sweating more. The truth is, your body is only working harder to cool you off and losing water leading to dehydration. There is no benefit to wearing heavy clothing and working up a drenching sweat. Choose clothing that is loose, comfortable and moisture-wicking to keep your body burning calories at an efficient level.
