Well, I have finally found the way to make Mamalode cool to my kids (funnily they have not until this point found me being terribly busy to be terribly cool)—Legos.

Now I just have to tell you what it is like at my house. There are Legos everywhere. My boys are 5 and 7 in chronological years, but are more like 12 and 14 in “Lego years” meaning that most of what they are able to put together is beyond my ability. Anything with 700+ parts and 48 pages of instructions falls into the “you can do that with daddy” category at my place. Anyhow, Legos make the world go round, and play a huge roll in the production of Mamalode as those little plastic wonders buy me HOURS of random emails and work-stuff.
But here is the great part—Laura (aka: momgeek) won my kids some Legos with an affiliate ad we were running. I know, how brilliant is she? But there is MORE. After I sent Lego a little “thanks for making my job cool to my kids” note, Frank from Lego sent my kids a new product to check out– seriously my sons’ dream job. They got this:

After much Impatient Waiting followed by Great Rejoicing when the package arrived our entire family promptly sat down to take the game for a spin. Of course the kids already knew the rules after a remarkable amount of time studying the website for every detail (they took this whole gig VERY seriously) so they told us how it worked. It was a hoot and there are several ways to play. They made a list of pros and cons for Frank (almost all raving Pros, down to the music on the website “not quite rock roll but really nice”—Dimitri, age 5)
So we took our show on the road. The package arrived the day before spring break so we traveled with it to Seattle and Portland and challenged many a discerning buddy along the way. The game was a hit. The only things to overshadow it were one of our Seattle friends busted out a marvelous collection of classic Lego kits (like from when we were kids— so awesome) and when we went to the Lego store in Portland (which for those of you moms with Lego-loving kids is a very sure bet on getting your kids to not complain about the car ride.) At the Lego store my boys got to brag a bit about their “job” and get a new kit. Also of note: they now sell nifty little Lego lifters, which will save my kids teeth for sure. A couple of bucks well spent.
So, yes, we just did a Lego tour of the Northwest. It was great. The Minotaurus Game was loved by all. Thanks for indulging us (readers, Lego, momgeek and Frank) and also thanks for setting the bar high for my kids, the Lego geniuses, to grow up looking always for a job they love as much as I love mine.
Elke Govertsen thinks her boys are spectacular people. She likes to read, collect obscure Norwegian enamelware and after much flirtation, is finally falling in love with yoga. She is married to a big old hunk of sweetness named Pauly who has messy hair and always gets up with the kids at night. She is also the publisher of Mamalode.
