Fit for Mama: HCG injections

Friday, April 2nd, 2010 in Fit for Mama

If you haven’t heard about this weight-loss plan, individuals either inject or orally take HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), a hormone produced during pregnancy, and restrict calories to 500 per day. Dr. ATE Simeons discovered in the 1950′s (a long time ago) that taking HG decreased hunger and increased fat loss.

Recently, a few popular weight loss promoters have taken Dr. Simeons’ idea and combined it with a restricted diet to get dramatic results. According to SparkPeople dietitian Becky Hand, “In study after study, researchers compared two groups: a control group who followed the diet only and another group who followed the same diet AND received HCG injections. Time after time, the weight loss between the two groups was identical, demonstrating that HCG injections offer no weight-loss advantage over dieting alone.”

My first response to hearing about this diet is, why would you put anything into your body that is not meant to be there? Second, restricting calories to 500 a day is guaranteed to lose weight, but those pounds could be related to muscle loss. Metabolism will dramatically slow down and your body will not be receiving the proper nutrients it needs. And last, what about a little exercise to build muscles and burn calories?
