I love giving gifts. Last week I felt sad for a moment remembering a time when all I thought about was making gifts. The sadness came from seeing that I didn’t consider homemade gifts for more than a tiny handful of people.
This is most realistic of me and not a statement on how lame everyone else in my life was for not appreciating my gifts better. Yet – that was part of the motivation for not making gifts as much as I used to. I felt folks responded so strangely that it took away from my joy. It was as though they were mad I made their gift look bad which was not my intention. I also can’t re-gift to these people which would make their gifts look great and thereby maybe they’d be happy. I can’t re-gift to them because they are offended by that practice though they would never admit to such.
These people I speak of are relatives I love who live far away and I’m pretty sure don’t ever read my public thoughts. I’m sharing because there’s a little gem here that’s worth the time to notice and because it was the cure to my sadness. I realized these days I give gifts that require much less heart, time and money AND the people receiving them are happier with me than ever before. Talk about a win-win situation.
