11/01/09-11/02/09: Festival of the Dead

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 in Stories, What and When

The Festival of the Dead celebration kicks off on Sunday, November 1 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the Missoula International School. The afternoon will include workshops for learners of all ages, an altar honoring the dead, and a no-waste Latin cuisine potluck (bring your own dishes and utensils that you can take home to wash). Potluck ideas are online. The event is free and open to the public. The Missoula International School is located at 1100 Harrison Street.

On November 2, Missoula will host the 17th Annual Festival of the Dead Parade. This evening event kicks off with a parade starting at Circle Square and goes to Caras Park at 6 pm. The Festival of the Dead parade includes UM Printmakers Steamroller Prints, “Mustang Second Line” (Meadow Hill Middle School Band), and the Missoula Public Library Book Cart Drill Team.

Stop by Circle Square at 5:30 pm for pre-parade performances by Hypsy Gypsies, the VSA Choir, Unity Dance and Drum, and a performance of “Thriller” by the UM dance department jazz class.

Post-parade performances at Caras Park include the UM African Dance Class, Unity Dance and Drum, and a zombie procession on to the sawdust mandala then to back up street and through alley to the Downtown Dance Collective.

At 8:00 pm a series of themed dance pieces will occur at the Downtown Dance Collective located at 121 West Main Street. This is a well-loved tradition open to all.

  1. The YWCA’s GUTS! girls (Girls Using Their Strengths) will be dressing up as historic women and marching in the Day of the Dead parade. Keep your eyes peeled for these awesome 4th – 12th graders who will no doubt be our women leaders of tomorrow!
